Ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Senator Salim Zia came out with his hatred for the Muhajir community on the national television. During an argument with an MQM leader on a talk show on SAMAA TV, Zia termed Muhajirs ‘kaalay kalotay‘, literally black and dark but is a derogatory slang uttered to offend others and look down on others.
The premise of his argument was that MQM goes everywhere to contest an election and that it didn’t even spare two seats of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Well, are those seats reserved for Kashmiris or those with not-so-kalay-kalotay skin? The answer is NO! Any Pakistani can contest from any constituency across the country and why should it be different about MQM or Muhajirs?
And what is this obsession with white skin anyway? Zia is Sindhi and there are several dark-skinned people in Sindh, as are in Punjab and where not. Why target MQM or Muhajirs alone? The only explanation is that Salim Zia reeks of racism and should be banned from appearing on TV talk shows.
I, for one, am proud of my dark complexion and if I decide to run for National Assembly election, I’ll run from wherever I damn please! Salim Zia and his ugly talk can try and stop me.
